Keratin associated protein 9-8 is a member of the ultrahigh sulfur keratin-associated protein family found in the hair cortex. These proteins form a matrix around keratin intermediate filaments and contribute to hair fiber structure and strength via extensive disulfide bonding, mediated by abundant cysteine residues. The KAP family is divided into high sulfur, ultrahigh sulfur, and high tyrosine/glycine groups according to their amino acid composition. KRTAP9-8 is involved in creating the rigid and resistant properties of the hair shaft and is localized to a cluster at chromosome 17q12-q21. Keratin associated protein 9-8 is a structural hair protein, not a therapeutic target, with no known disease involvement, drug interactions, or biomarker role. Its main function is to support hair fiber strength as part of the ultrahigh sulfur KAP family.
