Keratin-associated protein 9-9 (KRTAP9-9) is a member of the keratin-associated protein (KAP) family, a large group of proteins that, together with hair keratins, form the interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. KRTAP9-9 is classified as an "ultrahigh sulfur" KAP based on its amino acid composition and plays a structural role, contributing to the physical and mechanical properties of human hair. It is encoded by the KRTAP9-9 gene, which is part of a cluster of KRTAP genes located on human chromosome 17. There is no evidence that KRTAP9-9 functions as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or therapeutic target in disease. The function of KRTAP9-9 is primarily in hair structure and integrity, where it binds with keratin intermediate filaments by forming disulfide bonds, thus supporting the unique properties of hair fibers. The KAP gene family, including KRTAP9-9, is unique to mammals and is highly diverse; its main biological role is in hair and wool structure. No drugs are known to interact with KRTAP9-9, and it is not used as a biomarker or considered relevant for therapeutic safety concerns. While some KAP and keratin proteins are studied as biomarkers in certain diseases, KRTAP9-9 itself has not been reported in this context. KRTAP9-9 is a structural protein important for hair fiber formation. It is not a therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme, and is primarily studied in the context of hair biology.
