Target intelligence / Profile preview
Keratin matrix is not an individual molecule, receptor, or therapeutic target; it refers to the structural protein complex surrounding keratin intermediate filaments in hair, wool, and other keratinous tissues, primarily composed of specialized keratin-associated proteins[2][4][5][8]. Because it is not a discrete, targetable biomolecule or receptor, it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target, and the concept may be incorrect if intended as a drug target. The keratin matrix is the amorphous or irregular structural region surrounding and embedding keratin intermediate filaments (IFs) inside hair, wool, claws, nails, feathers, and other keratinous tissues[4][5][8]. It is largely composed of keratin-associated proteins (especially high-sulfur, high-glycine, and high-tyrosine proteins) as opposed to the crystalline domains of keratin IFs[2][4][8]. The matrix provides mechanical resilience, chemical resistance, and structural integrity by forming interfaces and bonds between IFs and the overall tissue[5][8]. Keratin matrices may display nanoscale organization, vary in composition depending on tissue type and treatment, and are important for the mechanical properties of fibrous tissues but do not possess functions or pharmacological relevance attributed to classic receptors or enzymes[4][5][8].
