Keratinase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protease, Serine Protease, Metalloprotease
01

Overview

Keratinase is a class of extracellular, inducible proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading insoluble keratin substrates such as feathers, hair, wool, nails, and other keratin-rich materials. These enzymes are primarily produced by microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) in response to the presence of keratin in their environment. Keratinases are notable for their ability to hydrolyze tough keratins that resist common proteases due to the protein’s compact structure and extensive crosslinking via disulfide bonds.
