Overview

Keratinization (also called cornification) refers to the transformation of living keratinocytes in the basal layer of stratified squamous epithelium into dead, flattened corneocytes filled with keratin protein. This process results in the formation of tough, insoluble surface structures such as the stratum corneum in skin. It is essential for forming protective barriers on body surfaces through orchestrated cellular changes involving specialized proteins and regulatory signals. Disruption can lead to significant dermatological disease states.
