Target intelligence / Profile preview
Keratinized structures, such as the stratum corneum, hair, and nails, are specialized tissues composed primarily of keratin proteins that provide a robust physical barrier for the body (Source: StatPearls, 2023). These structures are formed through the process of keratinization, where keratinocytes differentiate and eventually lose their nuclei to form a cornified layer that prevents desiccation and protects against environmental pathogens (Source: NIH, 2010). In clinical practice, these structures are the focus of treatments for conditions like hyperkeratosis, psoriasis, and fungal infections (Source: Wikipedia, 2024). Drugs such as keratolytics (e.g., salicylic acid) work by breaking down the intercellular cement between these structures, while others like terbinafine accumulate within them to exert antifungal effects (Source: PubChem, 2024). Consequently, while not a single molecular receptor, keratinized structures are essential pharmacological sites for dermatological health and disease management.
Keratolysis (dissolution of the intercellular substance in the stratum corneum), inhibition of keratinocyte proliferation, and antifungal binding to keratin proteins (Source: PubChem, 2024; StatPearls, 2023).
