Keratinocyte Desmosome Disruption

Molecular classification
Cell adhesion molecules, Desmosomes, Cadherins
01

Overview

Keratinocyte desmosome disruption refers to the process by which alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) weaken the adhesive structures (desmosomes/corneodesmosomes) between keratinocytes in the epidermis. This disruption is primarily achieved through chelation of calcium ions necessary for desmosomal cadherin function and modulation of intracellular calcium levels, leading to increased cell turnover and exfoliation. This process is targeted by AHAs for cosmetic and therapeutic applications such as chemical peels, acne treatment, and anti-aging.
