Keratinocyte Desquamation

Molecular classification
Biological Process
01

Overview

Keratinocyte desquamation is the physiological process by which dead, terminally differentiated keratinocytes (corneocytes) are shed from the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. This process is essential for maintaining skin barrier function, thickness, and self-renewal. It involves a complex interplay of adhesion structures (corneodesmosomes), proteolytic enzymes (KLKs), and their inhibitors (LEKTI), regulated by pH gradients and various signaling molecules. Dysregulation of desquamation leads to skin disorders such as scaling and hyperkeratosis.
