Keratinocyte protein denaturation

01

Overview

Keratinocyte protein denaturation describes the process by which proteins in keratinocytes (the main cell type of the epidermis) lose their natural three-dimensional structures and hence their function due to environmental or chemical stress. Denaturation disrupts hydrogen bonds, ionic interactions, and disulfide bridges, causing proteins to unfold and often aggregate, impairing cell function. In the context of the skin, such denaturation can compromise barrier function and has been studied in relation to surfactant exposure, thermal injury, or contact with harsh chemicals. This process does not correspond to a specific drug target but rather to a type of cellular injury.

02

Mechanism of action

Protein structure disruption (non-specific chemical or physical destabilization of protein structure)

03

Biological functions

Other (refers to loss of function due to structural alteration, not a normal biological function)
04

Disease associations

Other (protein denaturation can contribute to skin barrier dysfunction or damage, but it is not a disease mechanism or marker itself)
05

Safety considerations

Loss of skin barrier functionCytotoxicity to keratinocytesIrritant or allergic reactions (when denaturation is induced by skin contactants)
