Keratolytic agent

Keratolytic is not a specific molecule or receptor but rather a functional class describing agents—often drugs or enzymes—that promote the softening, breakdown, and shedding of the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). These agents are used therapeutically to treat rough or scaly skin conditions by facilitating exfoliation. Common examples include salicylic acid and lactic acid. Some keratolytics act enzymatically (e.g., certain proteases like keratinase), while others are chemical compounds. They do not represent a single molecular target but rather a group defined by their effect on keratinized tissue.
