Overview
Ketone body precursors are molecules, primarily fatty acids and ketogenic amino acids, that serve as the building blocks for ketone body synthesis in the liver. Ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone) are produced during periods of low carbohydrate availability and act as alternative metabolic fuels for extrahepatic tissues, including the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle. Their production is regulated by factors such as insulin levels, substrate availability, and hormonal signals. Dysregulation of ketone body metabolism can contribute to diseases such as diabetic ketoacidosis.
