Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed in all active phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, and mitosis) and absent in quiescent cells (G0). It is the most widely used marker to assess cell proliferation, especially in tumor pathology. High levels of Ki-67 are indicative of rapid cell proliferation and are associated with poor prognosis in various cancers. Detection of Ki-67 in tissue samples is commonly used to evaluate tumor aggressiveness, plan treatment strategies, and estimate clinical outcomes. Other cellular proliferation markers include PCNA, a DNA sliding clamp involved in replication, and phospho-histone H3, which marks cells undergoing mitosis.
