Kidney excretory function refers to the physiological process by which the kidneys filter blood, remove metabolic waste products, regulate water, electrolyte and acid-base balance, and maintain homeostasis. The central measure of this function is the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which quantifies how much blood passes through the kidney filters (glomeruli) per minute. Kidney excretory function involves a variety of anatomical structures (glomeruli, tubules, collecting ducts) and many molecular components (transporters, channels, and enzymes), collectively ensuring the removal of waste and excess substances from the body while retaining needed solutes. Impairment leads to conditions such as acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease, both of which have significant clinical implications for drug dosing, fluid/electrolyte management, and patient survival.
