Kidney function

"Kidney function" is not a molecule, receptor, or specific therapeutic target. Instead, it refers to the overall physiological performance of the kidneys in filtering blood, removing waste products and excess fluids via urine, regulating electrolytes and acid-base balance, and producing hormones involved in blood pressure regulation and red blood cell production[2][8]. In clinical practice and research, "kidney function" is typically assessed using surrogate markers such as serum creatinine levels or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)[2][8]. While molecular studies of kidney disease may identify specific genes or pathways relevant to renal pathology[1][3][5], "kidney function" itself does not correspond to any single protein or druggable target. Therefore, it should not be listed as a canonical therapeutic target for drug development purposes.
