Overview

The kidney glomerulus is the primary filtering unit of the kidney, essential for the initial step in urine formation. It consists of a tuft of capillaries located within Bowman's capsule, forming part of each nephron. Its main function is plasma filtration, where water and small solutes pass from the blood into Bowman’s space, while larger molecules and cells are retained in circulation. Proper functioning prevents proteinuria and hematuria; damage leads to leakage of proteins or blood cells into urine.
