Kidney meridian (KD, sometimes referred to as Foot Shao Yin)

The **Kidney meridian** is one of the twelve principal channels in Traditional Chinese Medicine, representing a pathway of vital energy (Qi) associated with the kidneys. It starts at the sole of the foot (Yongquan—KD1), ascends along the inner leg, passes through the abdomen, connects to the kidneys, bladder, lungs, throat, and brain, and influences the ears, bones, and reproductive system. In TCM theory, the kidneys are considered the "foundation of life," governing growth, reproduction, longevity, water metabolism, and storing Jing (essence). Imbalances in the Kidney meridian are believed to produce a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, coldness, memory loss, lower back pain, hormonal and reproductive issues, and aging-related decline. However, the Kidney meridian is not a molecular or biochemical entity and does not correspond to a pharmacological target; it remains a functional and energetic concept unique to TCM.
