Kidney tissue regeneration refers to the process by which damaged or lost kidney tissue is restored, aiming to recover normal structure and function. Unlike some organs, such as the liver, the adult mammalian kidney has a limited capacity for regeneration. The main mechanisms involved include proliferation of surviving mature cells, activation of resident renal stem/progenitor cells within the kidney. Investigational strategies include the use of hydrogels, electrospinning scaffolds, and three-dimensional bioprinting for engineering functional renal tissues ex vivo for transplantation purposes and manipulation of wound healing pathways to favor regeneration over fibrosis.
