Overview

The kidney tubular epithelium is the single-cell layer lining the nephron tubules, which is essential for reabsorption, secretion, and maintenance of body fluid and electrolyte balance. It comprises specialized cell types along different segments of the nephron, such as proximal tubule cells (high reabsorptive capacity, marked by brush borders), thick and thin limbs of the loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule cells, and cells of the collecting duct (principal and intercalated cells)[1][2][3][4][5]. These tubular epithelial cells respond dynamically to injury, are capable of dedifferentiation and proliferation for repair, and express unique segment-specific markers and proteins[6]. Dysfunction or injury in the kidney tubular epithelium underlies a variety of acute and chronic renal diseases[4][6][7].
