Kidney tubule epithelial cells are specialized epithelial cells lining the nephron’s tubular system, including segments such as the proximal tubule, loop of Henle (thin and thick limbs), distal convoluted tubule, and collecting duct. These cells enable reabsorption and secretion of water, electrolytes, and organic solutes, maintaining body fluid and electrolyte balance, and contributing to acid-base homeostasis. They exhibit distinct morphological and functional properties depending on their nephron segment. Dysfunction or injury to these cells underlies many forms of kidney disease. Each major segment hosts unique subtypes, identifiable by segment-specific markers and physiological roles. These cells are not a single drug target, but rather comprise the substrate on which many key molecular drug targets (such as ion channels, transporters, and receptors) are expressed.
