Kidney Yang Deficiency Syndrome

Kidney Yang Deficiency Syndrome refers to a diagnostic pattern in Traditional Chinese Medicine, characterized by "deficiency-cold" symptoms due to impaired Yang energy in the kidney system. Clinical features often include lower back soreness, cold extremities, fatigue, weakness in the lower limbs, aversion to cold, frequent urination, and decreased libido. In TCM theory, kidney yang is regarded as an essential source of warmth and activity for all organs; its deficiency manifests in general coldness, impaired metabolism (such as water retention or edema), and reproductive or urinary dysfunction. The syndrome does not map onto a single gene/protein/receptor but is a complex functional diagnosis involving the whole-body state, sometimes associated with measurable physiological states like hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression or symptoms similar to adrenal insufficiency. Western medicine does not recognize this as a molecular target. Management includes warming TCM herbal formulas such as Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan and You Gui Wan.
