Overview

KIF9 antisense RNA 1 (KIF9-AS1, FLJ39534) is a long non-coding RNA gene, transcribed from the region antisense to the KIF9 gene on the human genome[3]. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a class of RNA molecules larger than 200 nucleotides in length that do not encode functional proteins but can regulate gene expression at multiple levels, including chromatin modification, transcription, and post-transcriptional processing. The biological role and disease associations of KIF9-AS1 are currently not well defined in the scientific literature[3]. Do not confuse KIF9-AS1 (an lncRNA) with the protein-coding gene KIF9 (Kinesin family member 9), which encodes a kinesin motor protein important for microtubule-based transport and has established roles in sperm flagellar function and cell motility[1][2]. KIF9, but not KIF9-AS1, has been discussed as involved in male infertility and podosome regulation[1][2].
