Overview

Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor 3DX1 (KIR3DX1) is a member of the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) gene family, which encodes cell surface receptors found predominantly on natural killer (NK) cells and some T cells[1][3]. KIR proteins, in general, regulate NK cell cytotoxicity by interacting with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules[1][3]. However, in humans, KIR3DX1 remains a single, fixed gene located within the leukocyte receptor complex and is considered putative or nonfunctional—it is not expressed as a functional protein and its biological role is unknown[4]. The KIR3DX1 gene is evolutionarily conserved among primates, but—unlike other KIR family members—in humans, it does not contribute to recognized NK cell biology or immune disorders and is not a current or established drug target[4][2]. In other mammals such as cattle, expanded KIR3DX receptors mediate NK cell inhibition or activation, but these functions do not apply to the human gene[2][4].
