KIF11 is a molecular motor protein essential for mitosis. It belongs to the kinesin superfamily and plays a critical role in mitotic spindle formation by cross-linking and sliding apart anti-parallel microtubules. Overexpression or dysregulation of KIF11 is implicated in several cancers, making it a promising target for anticancer therapies. Small-molecule inhibitors targeting KIF11’s motor domain are under investigation as potential chemotherapeutics.
KIF11 assembles into a bipolar homotetramer that binds to overlapping regions of anti-parallel microtubules. Through its plus-end-directed motility powered by ATP hydrolysis at its motor domains, it slides these microtubules apart—an action critical for establishing a functional bipolar spindle during metaphase[2][3][6].
