Overview

Kinesin family member 13B (KIF13B) is a microtubule-based motor protein belonging to the kinesin superfamily, encoded by the KIF13B gene in humans. It plays a central role in intracellular cargo transport, especially trafficking of proteins important for neuronal polarity and axon formation. KIF13B also acts as a molecular scaffold, regulating key signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT and influencing processes like myelination in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. Its activity is important for correct nervous system development, and mutations are associated with neurodevelopmental syndromes and sensorineural deafness. While KIF13B is not currently a therapeutic drug target, its critical signaling and transport functions have been implicated in disease mechanisms[1][2][3][4][6].
