Overview

Kinesin family member 18B pseudogene 1 (KIF18BP1) is an unprocessed pseudogene that resembles the functional gene KIF18B but is not expected to be translated into a protein because it contains disabling mutations such as premature stop codons or frameshifts[1][3]. There are no published reports indicating a protein product, functional enzyme activity, or receptor function. Pseudogenes can sometimes act as regulatory RNAs if transcribed, competitively binding microRNAs and thereby affecting the regulation of their protein-coding "cognate" genes; however, there is no evidence in the literature or gene reports that KIF18BP1 is transcribed or has such a function[1][3][5]. It is therefore not regarded as a therapeutic target, nor is there evidence for use as a biomarker, target for drugs, or known safety/therapeutic concerns. Its primary classification remains as a pseudogene.
