Kinesin family member 2B (KIF2B) is a member of the kinesin-13 family of motor proteins that play a critical role in mitosis by regulating microtubule dynamics[8][7][5]. KIF2B is unique among kinesin-13 proteins because it is required for proper spindle assembly, chromosome congression, and cytokinesis. It functions as a microtubule depolymerase—breaking down microtubules at the spindle during cell division, ensuring chromosomes are properly aligned and segregated. Depletion of KIF2B leads to monopolar or disorganized spindles, slowed chromosome movement, and failure in cell division[1][4][7]. KIF2B is localized predominantly to centrosomes, spindle structures, kinetochores, and the spindle midzone. Disease roles include links to cancer and rare developmental syndromes affecting brain and skeletal formation, underlining its importance in cell proliferation and tissue development[7][8]. Targeting KIF2B could disrupt mitosis, a strategy of potential value in cancer therapy; however, there are currently no known drugs that specifically interact with KIF2B in the clinic.
