Overview

Kinesin family member 3C (KIF3C) is a neural-enriched member of the kinesin superfamily of microtubule-dependent motor proteins[4][2][3]. It primarily forms a heterodimer with KIF3A and is involved in microtubule-based anterograde transport of membranous organelles, especially in neurons[2][4][1]. KIF3C is characterized by an N-terminal kinesin motor domain, a central stalk (predicted coiled-coil facilitating dimerization), and a C-terminal globular tail thought to interact with cargoes[2][4]. KIF3C is highly expressed in the brain, spinal cord, and retina, with notable enrichment in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum and retinal ganglion cells[4]. It plays a critical role in axonal and dendritic transport, and its dysfunction could potentially impact neuronal maintenance or neurodegenerative processes, but it is not currently established as a direct therapeutic target for drugs[3][4].
