Overview

Kinesin family member 4B (KIF4B) is a human microtubule-based motor protein belonging to the kinesin-4 subfamily and TRAFAC class myosin-kinesin ATPase superfamily. Its primary biological role is to regulate chromosome segregation, anaphase spindle dynamics, and ensure proper completion of cytokinesis during cell division. KIF4B translocates PRC1 (Protein Regulator of Cytokinesis 1) to the plus ends of interdigitating spindle microtubules, a critical process for organizing the central spindle midzone and midbody, enabling appropriate mitotic exit and cell abscission. KIF4B is closely related to KIF4A, and depletion of either causes defects in spindle morphology and cytokinesis, resulting in multinucleated cells. Dysregulation of KIF4B or its close paralog has been implicated in cancers, certain developmental disorders, and aberrant neural development, indicating that it may be a potential therapeutic target, especially in mitosis-dependent proliferative diseases.
