Overview

Kinesin-like protein KIF23 (KIF23) is a member of the kinesin superfamily of microtubule-dependent motor proteins that plays a fundamental role in cell division, particularly cytokinesis, by forming part of the centralspindlin complex with RACGAP1. This complex is essential in assembling the contractile ring and abscission machinery, driving separation of daughter cells during mitosis. KIF23 is also vital for spindle organization and mitotic progression, and in neurons, it is involved in dendritic morphogenesis and maintenance. Pathogenic variants in KIF23 can disrupt normal cytokinesis, leading to congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type III and have been implicated in microcephaly due to impaired neural progenitor cell division. KIF23 has no known direct drug interactions but is considered a promising target in oncology and developmental disease research due to its essential role in proliferating cells[1][2][3][4].
