Kinocilin is a cytoskeleton-associated protein found predominantly in the kinocilium of auditory and vestibular hair cells within the inner ear. It has been proposed to contribute to the stabilization of microtubule structures and possibly vesicular transport within sensory hair cells. While highly enriched and specifically localized in hair cell kinocilium and cuticular plates, deletion studies in mice have demonstrated that loss of kinocilin does not result in any apparent defect in hair bundle structure, mechanotransduction, or auditory function, indicating that kinocilin is not essential for the function or maintenance of these structures. No validated interacting drugs, therapeutic mechanisms, or biomarker functions have been described in the literature for kinocilin. Disease associations are limited and do not implicate kinocilin as a major disease driver. If used for data structuring, these results suggest kinocilin is not a classical therapeutic target for drug development or disease-modifying approaches.
