Kir3.2, also known as GIRK2, is an inwardly rectifying potassium channel crucial for regulating neuronal excitability and maintaining resting membrane potential. It is activated by G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), particularly those coupled to Gi/o proteins. Predominantly expressed in brain neurons, it mediates the inhibitory effects of neurotransmitters by hyperpolarizing neuronal membranes, reducing neuronal firing rates. Dysregulation or mutations are implicated in pain perception, addiction, mood regulation and other neurological disorders.
