Overview
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, encapsulated, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is a facultative anaerobe commonly found in the human intestines and environmental sources. It can cause a variety of infections, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, wound infections, and meningitis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. A major concern is its increasing antimicrobial resistance, especially to carbapenems, making treatment challenging.
