Target intelligence / Profile preview

Klebsiella pneumoniae O-antigen Polysaccharide (O-antigen)

Target
O-antigen
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide component
01

Overview

The Klebsiella pneumoniae O-antigen polysaccharide is a structurally variable but functionally critical molecule that contributes significantly to bacterial survival during infection. It is a key component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) layer found on the outer membrane of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Its conserved features among dominant clinical isolates make it an important focus for diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccine design efforts aimed at combating multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae. It protects against host immune responses, including complement-mediated killing and phagocytosis. There are several serotypes based on structural variations in these polysaccharides, with the most common clinically relevant serotypes being O1, O2, O3, and O5.
