Overview

KLF3 antisense RNA 1 (KLF3-AS1, FLJ13197) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located on chromosome 4. It functions primarily by binding microRNAs (such as miR-185-5p, miR-223, miR-206, miR-138-5p, and miR-383), thereby regulating downstream gene expression, including the activation of KLF3 and other targets. KLF3-AS1 plays a tumor-suppressive role in several cancers (notably esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and gastric cancer), where its upregulation is associated with reduced tumor growth, invasion, and chemoresistance. It also promotes cartilage repair and chondrocyte survival in osteoarthritis, enhances angiogenesis and tissue repair in wound healing, and protects cardiomyocytes from ischemic injury. The molecule has emerged as a multifunctional regulator with therapeutic potential across a range of pathological states

Mechanism of action

Acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), "sponging" specific miRNAs (e.g., miR-185-5p, miR-223, miR-206, miR-138-5p, miR-383) to regulate gene expression in target cells and tissues
