Klotho Protein (KL)

Target
KL
Molecular classification
Type I transmembrane protein, Glycoprotein, Co-receptor, Hormone
01

Overview

The Klotho protein is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein predominantly produced in the kidney and expressed in other tissues. It functions as a co-receptor for FGF23, regulating mineral metabolism. It is considered an anti-aging factor and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Soluble Klotho serves as a biomarker for aging, kidney function, and inflammation, and is being explored as a potential therapeutic target.

Mechanism of action

Acts as a co-receptor for FGF23, regulating phosphate excretion, vitamin D metabolism, and calcium reabsorption. Modulates ion channel activity. Inhibits insulin/IGF-1 and Wnt signaling pathways. Activates antioxidant pathways and suppresses inflammation.
