KN motif and ankyrin repeat domains 1 pseudogene 1 (KANK1P1) is a retrotransposed genomic sequence that shares similarity with the KN motif and ankyrin repeat domains 1 gene (KANK1), which is implicated in cytoskeleton formation via actin polymerization. However, KANK1P1 is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not encode a functional protein. Experimental evidence shows it is transcriptionally silent (not expressed), highly methylated, and neither regulates nor interacts with the functional KANK1 gene, contravening earlier hypotheses. Thus, KANK1P1 does not participate in known biological functions, mechanisms, drug interactions, or human disease pathology[1]. For therapeutic or research interest, the relevant target is the protein-coding KANK1 gene[2]. If your goal is a therapeutic target or an active gene, you should seek KANK1, not KANK1P1. KANK1P1 contains no active roles and is considered a nonfunctional, evolutionary remnant[1].
