Krüppel-like factor 11 (KLF11) is a zinc finger transcription factor of the KLF family that binds GC-rich DNA promoter sequences to regulate gene expression in diverse metabolic pathways, notably those controlling insulin synthesis and secretion in pancreatic beta cells. It influences cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and cellular differentiation, playing vital roles in embryonic development, metabolic homeostasis, and pathological conditions such as diabetes and endometriosis. Genetic variants in KLF11 are directly linked to maturity-onset diabetes of the young type 7 and defects in glucose metabolism; functional studies show its importance in limiting fibrosis and maintaining extracellular matrix balance.
