Overview

Macrophages are large, specialized white blood cells of the innate immune system that play a central role in host defense, tissue homeostasis, and immune regulation. They are professional phagocytes responsible for detecting, engulfing, and destroying pathogens, cellular debris, and other foreign substances. Macrophages also act as antigen-presenting cells, initiating adaptive immune responses by presenting antigens to T lymphocytes.
