Overview

Kyasanur Forest Disease virus (KFDV) is a highly pathogenic tick-borne virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family and the genus Flavivirus (CDC, 2023). It is the causative agent of Kyasanur Forest Disease, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to the Karnataka state and surrounding regions in India (WHO, 2021). The virus possesses a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome that encodes a single polyprotein, which is post-translationally cleaved into three structural proteins and seven non-structural proteins (UniProt, 2024). While the virus itself is the pathogen, its internal components such as the NS5 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and NS3 protease are the primary molecular targets for antiviral drug development (PubMed: 30124256). Currently, there are no FDA-approved specific antiviral therapies, and management is limited to supportive care and a formalin-inactivated vaccine that requires multiple doses to maintain efficacy (NCBI, 2022). The disease is characterized by a biphasic illness, with the second phase often involving neurological symptoms like encephalitis (StatPearls, 2023).
