01

Overview

Kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT II) is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that plays a crucial role in the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism. This enzyme catalyzes the transamination of kynurenine (KYN) to form kynurenic acid (KYNA), an endogenous antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and alpha 7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. KAT II is considered the primary isoform responsible for KYNA synthesis in the mammalian brain, mainly active in astrocytes. Abnormal KYNA levels have been implicated in neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.
