L-alanine transaminase (ALT)

Target
ALT
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transaminase
01

Overview

L-alanine transaminase (ALT), also known as alanine aminotransferase, is an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible transfer of an amino group from L-alanine to α-ketoglutarate, producing pyruvate and L-glutamate. ALT is predominantly found in the liver, making it a key biomarker for liver health. Elevated serum ALT levels are indicative of hepatocellular injury or liver disease. The enzyme requires pyridoxal phosphate as a coenzyme. While ALT itself is not directly targeted by drugs, its levels are monitored to assess the impact of drugs and other factors on liver function.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable - ALT is primarily a biomarker, not a direct drug target, though drugs can affect its levels through liver effects.

Safety considerations

Elevated ALT can indicate liver damage but can also be caused by non-hepatic conditions, necessitating careful differential diagnosis.
