Overview

L-amino acids are organic compounds containing both amino (-NH₂) and carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional groups with a specific L-stereochemical configuration. They represent the fundamental building blocks of proteins, with 20 naturally occurring L-amino acids encoded by genetic code[4]. Each L-amino acid consists of an amino group, a carboxyl group, an α-carbon atom, and a variable side chain (R group) that determines its unique chemical and physical properties[4]. The L-configuration refers to the spatial arrangement analogous to a left hand, which is the predominant form in living organisms and ensures proper protein folding and biological functionality[4]. L-amino acids serve as substrates for various enzymes, including L-amino acid oxidases that catalyze their conversion to α-keto acids with production of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide[5], and are transported across cell membranes by L-amino acid transporters (LATs)[1]. They participate in numerous metabolic pathways including alanine and aspartate metabolism, methionine metabolism, and amino acid degradation pathways[5].
