L-amino acid deaminase (L-AAD)

Target
L-AAD
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase, Flavoenzyme
01

Overview

L-amino acid deaminase (L-AAD) is a membrane-bound, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-amino acids to produce their corresponding α-keto acids and ammonia. This reaction is significant in both metabolic pathways and industrial biocatalysis due to its broad substrate specificity and efficient conversion without generating hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Found in various organisms including bacteria (*Proteus*, *Providencia*, *Morganella* species), fungi, fish skin/gill secretions, insects, and snake venom. Plays roles in amino acid catabolism for energy production or biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.
