L-aspartate transaminase (AST)

Target
AST
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transferase, Aminotransferase
01

Overview

L-aspartate transaminase, also known as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in amino acid metabolism. It catalyzes the reversible transfer of an α-amino group between L-aspartate and α-ketoglutarate, resulting in the formation of oxaloacetate and L-glutamate. This reaction is essential for the interconversion of amino acids and for linking amino acid metabolism with the citric acid cycle. AST levels are commonly measured via blood tests to assess liver health or diagnose liver damage. Elevated AST can indicate liver injury or disease, or muscle damage.
