L-Carnitine (LC)

Target
LC
Molecular classification
Quaternary ammonium compound, Amino acid derivative, Cofactor, Other
01

Overview

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound derived from amino acids lysine and methionine. It plays a crucial role in energy metabolism by facilitating the transport of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for β-oxidation. It is essential for heart and brain function, muscle movement, and various other physiological processes. L-carnitine is synthesized in the body and obtained through dietary sources, primarily animal products. Supplemental L-carnitine is used therapeutically for carnitine deficiency syndromes, as adjunct therapy in cardiovascular diseases, and for patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Mechanism of action

L-carnitine facilitates the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation. It also participates in the transfer of acetyl groups and helps in the detoxification of acyl groups.
