L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC)

Target
HDC
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent decarboxylase
01

Overview

L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC) is an enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of L-histidine to histamine. It is the sole enzyme responsible for histamine synthesis in mammals and plays a critical role in various physiological processes, including immune regulation, neurotransmission, and gastric acid secretion. HDC is expressed primarily in mast cells, neurons, and gastric enterochromaffin-like cells. Pharmacological targeting of HDC is of interest for treating allergic reactions, neurological disorders, and gastrointestinal disorders.
