L-Methionine is an essential amino acid containing a sulfur-containing thioether side chain that plays critical roles in protein synthesis and cellular metabolism[3][7]. The compound functions as a primary methyl-group donor in metabolic pathways and serves as a biochemical precursor to L-cysteine and glutathione, contributing to antioxidant defense mechanisms[4][6]. In therapeutic applications, L-Methionine is used as a hepatoprotective agent, supporting liver function and preventing pathological fat accumulation, and serves as an antidote to acetaminophen (paracetamol) poisoning by supporting detoxification pathways[3][6].
