L-Methionine (also known as L-Met or H-Met-OH) (Met (or L-Met))

Target
Met (or L-Met)
Molecular classification
Essential amino acid, Sulfur-containing amino acid, Nonpolar, aliphatic amino acid, Organosulfide and amine derivative with carboxylic acid functional groups
01

Overview

L-Methionine is an essential amino acid containing a sulfur-containing thioether side chain that plays critical roles in protein synthesis and cellular metabolism[3][7]. The compound functions as a primary methyl-group donor in metabolic pathways and serves as a biochemical precursor to L-cysteine and glutathione, contributing to antioxidant defense mechanisms[4][6]. In therapeutic applications, L-Methionine is used as a hepatoprotective agent, supporting liver function and preventing pathological fat accumulation, and serves as an antidote to acetaminophen (paracetamol) poisoning by supporting detoxification pathways[3][6]. The amino acid is also utilized as a urinary acidifier and chelating agent for heavy metals[6]. Unlike traditional drug targets such as receptors or enzymes, L-Methionine is administered directly as a nutraceutical and dietary supplement to support metabolic function and tissue repair[5][6].

Mechanism of action

As a therapeutic agent (not a target), L-Methionine functions through: - Methyl group transfer in metabolic pathways[6] - Conversion to L-cysteine and subsequently to glutathione for antioxidant activity[4] - Support of hepatic detoxification pathways[3][6]

Biological functions

Methyl group donation: Acts as a common methyl-group donor *in vivo*Precursor synthesis: Precursor to L-cysteine, which is itself a precursor to the antioxidant glutathioneProtein synthesis: Component of all proteins requiring methionine incorporationCholine synthesis: Supplies required methyl groups for choline synthesis; choline is a component of lecithinHepatoprotection: Acts as a hepatoprotectant and removes fat from the liverHeavy metal chelation: Serves as a chelating agent for heavy metalsTissue repair: Essential for tissue repair

Disease associations

Acetaminophen (paracetamol) poisoning: Serves as an antidote to paracetamol poisoningUrinary acidification: Functions as a urinary acidifierLiver disease: Hepatoprotective role in preventing fat deposition in the liver
