L-rhamnose isomerase (EC 5.3.1.14) is a bacterial enzyme that catalyzes the reversible conversion of L-rhamnose to L-rhamnulose (UniProt: P0AEE3). It belongs to the isomerase family and typically requires divalent metal ions such as manganese or cobalt for its catalytic activity (PubMed: 11554771). In nature, the enzyme is part of the rhamnose operon, allowing microorganisms to utilize L-rhamnose as a carbon and energy source (PubMed: 25636005).
