L-type Amino Acid Transporter (LAT)

Target
LAT
Molecular classification
Transporter, Amino Acid Transporter
01

Overview

The L-type amino acid transporter (LAT) family comprises several members (LAT1-LAT4) that mediate the sodium-independent transport of large neutral amino acids. LAT1 (SLC7A5) is the most well-studied member and forms a heterodimeric complex with 4F2hc/CD98. It is highly expressed at the blood-brain barrier, placenta, and in various cancers, playing a crucial role in supplying essential amino acids for cell growth and proliferation. It has clinical significance because its overexpression in tumors makes it a therapeutic target, and its presence at the BBB allows it to be exploited for drug delivery to the brain.
